Background:
Growing up around the beach greatly influenced my career. Not many days passed when I wasn't in the water or on a boat. After visiting SeaWorld as a teen, I knew where I wanted to work. I received my Bachelor's degree from the University of Long Island, N.Y. Then I packed up and moved to Florida and started at SeaWorld three weeks later.
Recent adventures: SeaWorld Orlando receives many injured gopher tortoises, which are a threatened species. We just completed a new habitat specifically designed for these animals to live in during their rehabilitation. It comes complete with a garden of edible plants. Our educational tours can now pass by and see these native animals up close.
Favorite part of the job: Being able to return an injured animal back to the wild. Just this May after five and a half years of rehabilitation from a life-threatening boat strike we returned an adult male loggerhead sea turtle to the wild. Not only was this SeaWorld Orlando's longest rehabilitation, it was the first time the aquarium department used our boat to release a sea turtle offshore. I was happy to have seen this turtle all the way through his recovery to his release. Every time I go back to New York to visit family and friends, I realize what an incredibly cool job I have.
