Background: I wanted to work at SeaWorld since I was about 6. I always had a fish tank of my own. I started writing letters to SeaWorld, which were answered by Donna Potter Parham in the Education Department.
At age nine, I went to my first SeaWorld Camp.
Jody (Rake) was my first SeaWorld teacher. Every summer after that, my family would spend a week in
San Diego just so I could go to SeaWorld Camp.
When I got too old for camp, I got my first real job at SeaWorld as a narrator during the summer. My family and I spent the whole summer camping at a nearby RV park, and my dad even got a summer job at SeaWorld, too. In college, I also worked as a lifeguard and swim instructor. After earning an associate's degree, I moved to San Diego in 2000 to finish up at San Diego State.
Favorite part of the job: I love working with the fish and other animals, obviously, but I also love the people I work with. I like working in and around water and being able to dive as part of my job. I also like the physical labor. It keeps me busy and makes the day go by fast, and when I get home I feel like I've put in a good day of work. And, because I have only been in the department a year, I'm still learning a lot. |
