Background: During my teaching career in
Gainesville, Florida, I attended the Florida
Educational Technology Conference. I
visited the booth for Busch Gardens and
SeaWorld and asked if they had employment
opportunities for teachers. Initially I was just
looking for a camp counselor position during
summer break. I never imagined I’d become
a full-time educator in the largest and most
phenomenal classroom I’ve ever experienced
– Busch Gardens Tampa Bay.
Highlights: Since joining the Busch
Gardens team, I’ve learned so much and
worked with many great people and animals.
I’ve worked with the park’s expert team of
zookeepers and had the opportunity to work
hands-on with many of the animals in their
care, including birds, reptiles, mammals
and invertebrates. I’ve also collaborated
with our behavioral training teams to help
train servals, vultures, lemurs, armadillos,
kangaroos, cranes and macaws. I’ve
traveled across the country with our animal
ambassadors, representing the parks as
well as the SeaWorld and Busch Gardens
Conservation Fund. Interacting with guests
in the park, on our Serengeti Safari tours
and in our camp programs, is incredibly
rewarding and very fun. I’ve also been
honored to meet phenomenal kids from all
over the world through the SeaWorld/Busch
Gardens Environmental Excellence Awards
and the National Geographic Championship,
events hosted at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay.
Favorite part of the job: This job is all about making connections - connections with peers, professionals in and out of the company and guests worldwide. I am constantly rewarded by these interactions. Seeing wonder on a guest's face as he or she interacts with one of our animals. Sharing ideas with peers and working with a team to achieve a common goal. And hearing from those you've encountered - weeks, months, or years after you met them.
