"Working with SeaWorld, Busch Gardens and Discovery Cove brings value to all sides of the partnership."

Who:
Conservation Breeding Specialist Group

Headquarters:
Apple Valley, MN

Mission:
Conservation or establishment of viable populations of threatened wildlife through conservation breeding programs and intensive protection and management of plant and animal populations in the wild.

Park Partner Since:
1993

Partnership activities: As one of the largest groups within the SPECIES SURVIVAL COMMISSION of the IUCN (The World Conservation Union), the Conservation Breeding Specialist Group plays an important role in developing practical and sustainable survival plans for a diversity of at-risk species. For more than a decade, the Anheuser-Busch Adventure Parks have supported CBSG's Population and Habitat Viability Assessment workshops, or PHVAs. These workshops bring together leading scientists, researchers, community representatives and government officials to develop a species protection plan based on population and conservation biology, genetics, ecology and human demography. Human-based threats and land-use are also considered to ultimately produce a long-term management plan. Busch Gardens, SeaWorld and Discovery Cove have supported PHVA workshops for such at-risk species as Galapagos penguins, Mediterranean monk seals, manatees, African frogs and the rare Chinese river dolphin.

Partner perspective: "By supporting our PHVA workshops, SeaWorld, Busch Gardens and Discovery Cove have helped us develop sound, strategic recovery plans for more than a dozen at-risk species and habitats," said Dr. Onnie Byers, CBSG's Executive Officer. "These workshops result in real-world management plans for local communities and governments to implement."
